Mystery `Eleanor Rigby' document goes to auction

LONDON – Eleanor Rigby: fact or fiction?
That question, which has bedeviled Beatles' fans for decades, may be answered in part by a 1911 hospital payroll sheet to be auctioned in London on Thursday.
The document, sent by Paul McCartney in 1990 to the director of a music charity who had asked for funding, contains the signature of a scullery maid named "E. Rigby" who worked in a Liverpool hospital.
The director of the company auctioning the document believes the woman who signed the payroll is the same Eleanor Rigby buried in 1939 in a Liverpool graveyard next to the church where McCartney met the young John Lennon.
"I've spoken to the person who lived in the house where she used to live, and they've confirmed that the signature is the same signature of the person in the graveyard," said Tom Owen of the Fame Bureau auction house, adding that the finding may cont! radict McCartney's longtime assertion that the song was based on a made-up character.
"It's intriguing that McCartney owned it because he says he created the song around a fictitious figure," said Owen. "And yet, how did he have this document and why did he have it? When he was asked to donate money, he sent this."
Interest is so high it's estimated the document may fetch $750,000.

McEntire explained, "It's not like I ever consciously decided to wait so long between studio albums. We just had these great opportunities along the way-to put out another Greatest Hits, plus the TV show was going on and then we did the Duets project. Before I knew it, six years had gone by."

Saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman passed away Tuesday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 75.
Newman not only recorded his own albums and played with a number of jazz greats, but also worked with Dr. John, Aretha Franklin, Aaron Neville and the Ray Charles Band among others.

Haggard Feeling Better
Merle Haggard has told People magazine that he's feeling better everyday and wants to get back to the studio and on the road. "I'm doing real well, a little better every day.....I'm going into the studio to see how my voice sounds.
"Most of the reports were like, 'He's got six months to live!' There was never any indication of that. I lost the upper lobe of my right lung where there was a tumor suspended like a fruit on a tree. But there was no chemo. I feel like I've extended my life. I'm in better shape than when I went in."

The U.K. paper The Sun reports that the r! eformed Faces have already recorded their first album in over ! thirty y ears. Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan and an unnamed bass player supposedly were inspired after a trip together to Costa Rica, Bermuda and Miami.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror tempers that a bit by saying that Stewart and Wood are done writing the songs for the album, which they completed in three days on that vacation. The Mirror also "confirms" that Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers will be the bass player.

It's been reported that James Taylor was taken to the hospital and received fifty stitches after falling at a rehearsal for the Barack Obama concert last Sunday. A spokesperson for the singer said that he fell, cutting his forehead on a guitar, which would explain why he wore the hat and sunglasses when he performed.

David Bowie announ! ced that he was working on new music via a Twitter message. "Cheers from a snowy Berlin! Working on some new material!" Bowie has made three other albums in the German city (Low, Heroes, Lodger).

Bruce Springsteen would like to think that music played a small part in helping Barack Obama become president.
Springsteen performed during the weekend inaugural festivities, and was a big Obama booster during the campaign.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine he doesn't think rockers have a whole lot of inf! luence, but can create a vision of the world as it should be.
Bob Dylan's classic album "Highway 61 Revisited" did it for him, and Springsteen says he hopes that in some way, his music may have had the same effect.
Springsteen says the world he envisioned for years in his songs was realized when Obama was elected. Says the 59-year-old singer: "It's not just something I dreamed up. It can exist."

Bird & Animal Names In Rock & Roll History- part two
Throughout music history there have been many bands that have adopted an "animal" or "bird" monikers to represent their band and their sound. Some artists even have a last name that fits into this category and in this continuing article series we will explore some of the unique "animal" and "bird" names and the diverse music that has been created by these groups or individuals.
As I prepared for this project, I did not realize the amount of bands and artists who fall into the category. There are so many new bands like Fleet Foxes, Minus The Bear, Weird Owl and Andrew Bird, Animal Collective, just to name a few, to add to the growing list (which is no particular order). If you have a particular band or artist that fits into this article series, please email me and I can add them to the growing and seemingly endless list. Look for this feature every Tuesday and Thursday. This should be a fun series! Here is part two:
In th! e last article, we talked about "animal" band names including the Teddy Bears, the novelty act the Chipmunks and of course led off with the British group The Animals. Let's explore more "animal" group names in music history.
The Turtles first hit the charts in 1965 with a cover of a Bob Dylan tune, "It Ain't Me Babe" on a "fish" record label called White Whale. They followed that Top Ten hit with several more pop rock gems including, "She'd Rather Be With Me" and "Elenore," among others. They also secured a number one hit in the spring of 1967 with a song called "Happy Together." Interestingly, the Turtles had recorded the song "Eve Of Destruction" on their LP "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1965, but did not release it as a single. The P. F. Sloan protest song ultimately went to the number one position after it was released by Barry McGuire.
At the end of the sixties, group members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman hooked up with Frank Zappa a! nd the Mothers of Invention and also performed on their own as! Flo and Eddie. Kaylan and Volman sang backing vocals on several recordings by T.Rex, including their epic #1 hit "Get it On (Bang A Gong)" and albums by Electric Warrior and The Slider. They also sang backup on Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart", from his album The River. They continue to perform today, both as Flo and Eddie and as the Turtles.
In 1966, an advertisement in the Hollywood Trade paper "Daily Variety" implored "folk and rock musicians-singers for acting roles in a new television series." It is reported that more than 430 people answered the ad including Harry Nilsson, Danny Hutton (later to be with 3 Dog Night), songwriter Paul Williams ! and Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young fame), among others. Stills was rejected because his teeth and hair weren't perfect, but he had a friend that resembled him. His friend, Peter Tork went into the audition, walked into a wall and the job was his and became part of the "made for TV" group The Monkees.
With songs written by some of the most talented songwriters of the time (including Gerry Goffin-Carole King, Neil Diamond, Neil Sedaka, Tommy Boyce-Bobby Hart among others), the Monkees achieved major pop rock success with such hits as the catchy rocker "Last Train To Clarksville," the Neil Diamond written number one hit, "I'm A Believer," (which was number one for an incredible seven weeks), the pop gem by Davy Jones called "Daydream Believer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (which was written by the legendary song writing duo of Gerry Goffin and Carole King), among others and members Michael Nesmith, Davey Jones, Peter Tork and ! Mickey Dolenz became international superstars.
The ! televisi on show, appropriately called the Monkees, featured the quartet in inane and slapstick sketches and also showcased their music. Despite the fact that the group was not permitted to play instruments on the records, the public gobbled up "Monkeemania." But, with pressure from that same public and band member Michael Nesmith's urging (and to deflect the growing public criticism), they started to play instruments on their third album "Headquarters."
In one of the rock's most embarrassing moments, in 1967 the Monkees toured with a gentleman named Jimi Hendrix as their opening act. But Monkee fans disliked the legendary guitar player (who was largely unknown here in the states, but had a strong following in Europe) and booed him. Finally, in New York, Hendrix had enough, flipped-off the screaming Monkee fans and quit the tour.
It is said that camera happy band members Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz didn't care much about the music. In fact, Dolenz was k! nown to slip the cameraman twenty-five dollars to make sure he received the most close-ups. Jones then slipped the cameraman thirty-five dollars and promptly stole the show.
When MTV began re-broadcasting the television series in 1987, a second wave of "Monkeemania" gripped the nation as the group enjoyed a major revival in popularity that even put six of their old albums back onto the charts. A new best of "Then And Now" achieved platinum status and the band (minus Mike Nesmith) scored a Top 40 hit with a new song entitled 'That Was Then, This Is Now"; one of three new cuts recorded by the trio of Jones, Tork and Dolenz. The trio toured in the summer of '87 and went on to record a new album called "Pool It!" the following year. But, Nesmith had no interest in rejoining the group, but did join the band when they were awarded a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1989. Nesmith relented in 1996 and returned to the band for an album called "Justus" which coinci! ded with Rhino Records' twenty-one volume video set of the pop! ular tel evision show. Another "Greatest Hits" compilation album went gold in 2000.

Various reincarnations of the band have played together with different personnel, but the constant was always having Kaylan and Volman leading the bands.
In 1984, Kaylan and Volman legally regained the use of the Turtles name, and began touring as The Turtles... Featuring Flo and Eddie. Instead of trying to reunite with their earlier band mates, they began featuring all-star sidemen who had played with different groups.

Monkees' Tidbits
Monkees critics complained that they were just a made-for-TV knockoff of the Beatles, but the Fab Four took it in stride, and welcomed the Monkees when they visited England. John Lennon publicly compared the Monkees' humor to The Marx Brothers, a high compliment indeed. In fact, Nesmith attended the "A Day in the Life" sessions at Abbey Road Studios and he can be seen in the Beatles' home movies, including one scene where he is conversing with Lennon (who called him "Monkee Man").
On their third album, Headquarters (1967) the four Monkees actually wrote and played much of their own material. The album quickly shot to #1, but was bumped off the top slot when ! the Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." ! Interes tingly, the Monkees outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined in 1967.
In the 1990s, the Monkees continued to record new material, their 11th album, Justus, was released in 1996. It was the first since 1968 on which all four original members performed and produced. Justus was produced by the Monkees, all songs were written by one of the four Monkees, and it was recorded using only the four Monkees for all instruments and vocals, which was the inspiration for the album title and spelling (Justus = Just Us).
The Monkees were the first band to use a Moog Synthesizer in a top-10 album (used on "Star Collector", "Daily Nightly" and "Love Is Only Sleeping" from Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., released in November of 1967).
The band's success actually compelled another David Jones to change his surname to Bowie, to avoid being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees.

Interestingly, the Turtles had recorded the song "Eve Of Destruction" on their LP "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1965, but did not release it as a single. The P. F. Sloan protest song ultimately went to the number one position after it was released by Barry McGuire.
At the end of the sixties, group members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman hooked up with Frank Zappa a! nd the Mothers of Invention and also performed on their own as! Flo and Eddie. Kaylan and Volman sang backing vocals on several recordings by T.Rex, including their epic #1 hit "Get it On (Bang A Gong)" and albums by Electric Warrior and The Slider. They also sang backup on Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart", from his album The River. They continue to perform today, both as Flo and Eddie and as the Turtles.
In 1966, an advertisement in the Hollywood Trade paper "Daily Variety" implored "folk and rock musicians-singers for acting roles in a new television series." It is reported that more than 430 people answered the ad including Harry Nilsson, Danny Hutton (later to be with 3 Dog Night), songwriter Paul Williams ! and Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young fame), among others. Stills was rejected because his teeth and hair weren't perfect, but he had a friend that resembled him. His friend, Peter Tork went into the audition, walked into a wall and the job was his and became part of the "made for TV" group The Monkees.
With songs written by some of the most talented songwriters of the time (including Gerry Goffin-Carole King, Neil Diamond, Neil Sedaka, Tommy Boyce-Bobby Hart among others), the Monkees achieved major pop rock success with such hits as the catchy rocker "Last Train To Clarksville," the Neil Diamond written number one hit, "I'm A Believer," (which was number one for an incredible seven weeks), the pop gem by Davy Jones called "Daydream Believer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (which was written by the legendary song writing duo of Gerry Goffin and Carole King), among others and members Michael Nesmith, Davey Jones, Peter Tork and ! Mickey Dolenz became international superstars.
The ! televisi on show, appropriately called the Monkees, featured the quartet in inane and slapstick sketches and also showcased their music. Despite the fact that the group was not permitted to play instruments on the records, the public gobbled up "Monkeemania." But, with pressure from that same public and band member Michael Nesmith's urging (and to deflect the growing public criticism), they started to play instruments on their third album "Headquarters."
In one of the rock's most embarrassing moments, in 1967 the Monkees toured with a gentleman named Jimi Hendrix as their opening act. But Monkee fans disliked the legendary guitar player (who was largely unknown here in the states, but had a strong following in Europe) and booed him. Finally, in New York, Hendrix had enough, flipped-off the screaming Monkee fans and quit the tour.
It is said that camera happy band members Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz didn't care much about the music. In fact, Dolenz was k! nown to slip the cameraman twenty-five dollars to make sure he received the most close-ups. Jones then slipped the cameraman thirty-five dollars and promptly stole the show.
When MTV began re-broadcasting the television series in 1987, a second wave of "Monkeemania" gripped the nation as the group enjoyed a major revival in popularity that even put six of their old albums back onto the charts. A new best of "Then And Now" achieved platinum status and the band (minus Mike Nesmith) scored a Top 40 hit with a new song entitled 'That Was Then, This Is Now"; one of three new cuts recorded by the trio of Jones, Tork and Dolenz. The trio toured in the summer of '87 and went on to record a new album called "Pool It!" the following year. But, Nesmith had no interest in rejoining the group, but did join the band when they were awarded a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1989. Nesmith relented in 1996 and returned to the band for an album called "Justus" which coinci! ded with Rhino Records' twenty-one volume video set of the pop! ular tel evision show. Another "Greatest Hits" compilation album went gold in 2000.

Monkees' Tidbits
Monkees critics complained that they were just a made-for-TV knockoff of the Beatles, but the Fab Four took it in stride, and welcomed the Monkees when they visited England. John Lennon publicly compared the Monkees' humor to The Marx Brothers, a high compliment indeed. In fact, Nesmith attended the "A Day in the Life" sessions at Abbey Road Studios and he can be seen in the Beatles' home movies, including one scene where he is conversing with Lennon (who called him "Monkee Man").
On their third album, Headquarters (1967) the four Monkees actually wrote and played much of their own material. The album quickly shot to #1, but was bumped off the top slot when ! the Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." ! Interes tingly, the Monkees outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined in 1967.
In the 1990s, the Monkees continued to record new material, their 11th album, Justus, was released in 1996. It was the first since 1968 on which all four original members performed and produced. Justus was produced by the Monkees, all songs were written by one of the four Monkees, and it was recorded using only the four Monkees for all instruments and vocals, which was the inspiration for the album title and spelling (Justus = Just Us).
The Monkees were the first band to use a Moog Synthesizer in a top-10 album (used on "Star Collector", "Daily Nightly" and "Love Is Only Sleeping" from Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., released in November of 1967).
The band's success actually compelled another David Jones to change his surname to Bowie, to avoid being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees.

Jesus Lizard Remaster Classic Albums for Late Summer Release
Where were you when Jesus Lizard was releasing seminal releases like Goat and Head and Pure? It doesn't really matter anymore, because if you missed them back in the day, they're all available to you now as remastered versions, starting on September 22nd via Touch and Go Records. All of the tracks were remastered by Bob Weston and Steve Albini.
As full length albums, both Goat and Head will be available on vinyl, CD and MP3 versions, with the vinyl version including a coupon to redeem for an additional MP3 version.
As an EP, Pure is only available in 12" vinyl or MP3 with the same coupon/download approach. It also features "Bloody Mary (Live)" is a bonus track.
This re-issued version of all three include expanded liner notes and new photos.

Rare Beatles LPs
Earlier in the week, I told you about a gent who, for years, during the wee small hours, as an employee at a Capitol Records pressing plant created a series of magnificent one-of-a-kind LPs.
These spectacular, rainbow-coloured records were created by an unnamed former worker at a Capitol plant in Canada. After shifts at the factory, the employee "would amuse himself", according to a pair of Toronto vinyl dealers, "by creating totally unique coloured-vinyl LPs". As an employee of Capitol, this Beatles fan allegedly had access to the "original plates" f! or several albums. Using these, he would press his own special copies – applying coloured dye and artisanal techniques.
These copies include Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on bright baby-blue marble vinyl, the 1967-70 greatest hits compilation on swirled blue-and-white vinyl, and a translucent blue LP with side A of Revolver and side B of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album.
However, the most beautiful item in the collection is the Beatles' Love Songs anthology, made with gold vinyl. This is streaked with an abstract expressionist rainbow, like an explosion at a paint factory. Unfortunately, the set's second LP is just plain black vinyl.
In addition to the Beatles records, the vinyl guru also pressed special versions of albums by Helen Reddy, Peter Appleyard and a compilation featuring Anne Murray.

Red Hot Chili Peppers plan 2010 release
With e nthusiasm again behind them and a self-imposed hiatus scheduled to end this month, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have begun plotting their next move. And as drummer Chad Smith revealed in a recent interview with Clash Music, this next move will include a new studio album in 2010.
"We're gonna write for a while, it usually takes us a while," explained Smith before speculating that the release date would be "Some time next year, maybe this time [next year]."

Having topped myriad "Best Of" lists in 2008 with their widely acclaimed sophomore album, "The Midnight Organ Fight," Glasgow's Frightened Rabbit returns with their anticipated third album, "The Winter Of Mixed Drinks." The follow-up to their breakthrough LP will be released worldwide in March 2010 on FatCat Records. The record's first taste, "Swim Until You Can't See Land," is st! reaming now via FatCat's website and will be digitally released November 17th, followed by a 7-inch b/w "Fun Stuff" on December 8th.
The Rabbit's jangly, anthemic sophomore album earned them critical adoration; among those bestowing it with best-of-the-year laurels were Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Poll, The Onion, Magnet, and Pitchfork, who also designated album opener, "The Modern Leper," one of "The Best Tracks of 2008" as well as one of its "Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s." Upon its unveiling, the foursome's newest offering, "Swim Until You Can't See Land," made instant waves online, with RollingStone.com gushing: "We suggest you find a quiet spot this afternoon, turn your desk speakers up and drink it all in."
Following an exciting but exhausting year, lead Rabbit Scott Hutchison retreated to the harbor town of Crail, along Scotland's Fyfe coastline, and was inspired to pen "Swim," an undeniably catchy song about "losing your mind in order to rest ! the mind and the body." The track, buoyed by chiming guitars a! nd a shu ffling beat, builds and swells as it progresses, bolstered by a sweeping string arrangement courtesy of fellow FatCat artist Hauschka.
According to Hutchison, "Swim" is the natural lead-in to the album: "It's the one that sort of sums up the record for me," he reveals. "I had the song's title in my mind before I even started writing the album; I was becoming more and more interested in the idea of a rejection of the habits and behavior most people see as normal, and in turn embracing a certain madness. This is not necessarily a geographical journey, as the 'swim' can involve any activity in which you can lose yourself. It's a good introduction to the record as the theme unravels therein."
Nautical references continue throughout the album, interwoven among recurring themes of wearied endurance, recaptured freedom, and redemption. "Thematically, this record had to be different from the last," explains Hutchison. "Nobody wanted to hear more break-up songs,! and thankfully, I no longer had any in me."
While a failed relationship may not be the centerpiece of this new collection, the songs retain some of the solemnity of previous efforts. "I think even the most upbeat moments on the record are conveyed in somewhat dark language," Hutchison admits.
Frightened Rabbit will be touring the UK through the end of the year, with a string of headlining gigs followed by a weeklong run in Ireland and England with Modest Mouse.
A full North American tour is planned for the album's release.

The Band Of Heathens Appear On PBS' Austin City Limits
The Band of Heathens, whose new album One Foot in the Ether the web 'zine AmericanaRoots.com ponders as "the best record of 2009," will appear on PBS' Austin City Limits on November 7 on a bill headlined by Elvis Costello. On the program, the band performs five songs: "Jackson Station," "L! .A. County Blues," "Shine a Light," "Golden Calf" and "You're ! Gonna Mi ss Me When I'm Gone."
Austin City Limits celebrates its 35th season this year and is the longest running music series in American TV history - the show was recently named a landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Other artists on tap this season include Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, Ben Harper, M. Ward, Asleep at the Wheel, Andrew Bird and Steve Earle.
Although both the Band of Heathens and the producers of Austin City Limits are based in Austin, ACL executive producer Terry Lickona first saw the band while in Nashville for the 2008 Americana Music Festival and Conference.

Jesse Malin finds new label, readies new album
Jesse Malin, aka the former frontman of legendary punk outfits Heart Attack and D Generation who is now an acclaimed singer/songwriter as well as a friend of Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams, has been signed by Side One Dummy Records. This is particularly big news because Malin has already begun work on his first release for the label and is currently held up at at Sonic Youth's Think Tank Studio in Hoboken, NJ with producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Flogging ! Molly).
According to an issued press release, the yet-to-be-titled effort was written after a personality crisis and brief hiatus during which Malin attempted-among other things-stints as a charity auctioneer; a Las Vegas wedding DJ; and a documentarian of Rastafarian culture. But none of that, as Malin explains, has taken away from his one-of-a-kind intensity: "I wanted to mix the raw, loose energy that I got from playing in my early hardcore bands and the lonely feeling I get from traveling with an acoustic guitar."
Expect to hear the album in early 2010, with many tour dates to follow.

While a failed relationship may not be the centerpiece of this new collection, the songs retain some of the solemnity of previous efforts. "I think even the most upbeat moments on the record are conveyed in somewhat dark language," Hutchison admits.
Frightened Rabbit will be touring the UK through the end of the year, with a string of headlining gigs followed by a weeklong run in Ireland and England with Modest Mouse.
A full North American tour is planned for the album's release.

The Band Of Heathens Appear On PBS' Austin City Limits
The Band of Heathens, whose new album One Foot in the Ether the web 'zine AmericanaRoots.com ponders as "the best record of 2009," will appear on PBS' Austin City Limits on November 7 on a bill headlined by Elvis Costello. On the program, the band performs five songs: "Jackson Station," "L! .A. County Blues," "Shine a Light," "Golden Calf" and "You're ! Gonna Mi ss Me When I'm Gone."
Austin City Limits celebrates its 35th season this year and is the longest running music series in American TV history - the show was recently named a landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Other artists on tap this season include Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam, Ben Harper, M. Ward, Asleep at the Wheel, Andrew Bird and Steve Earle.
Although both the Band of Heathens and the producers of Austin City Limits are based in Austin, ACL executive producer Terry Lickona first saw the band while in Nashville for the 2008 Americana Music Festival and Conference.

Jesse Malin finds new label, readies new album
Jesse Malin, aka the former frontman of legendary punk outfits Heart Attack and D Generation who is now an acclaimed singer/songwriter as well as a friend of Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams, has been signed by Side One Dummy Records. This is particularly big news because Malin has already begun work on his first release for the label and is currently held up at at Sonic Youth's Think Tank Studio in Hoboken, NJ with producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Flogging ! Molly).
According to an issued press release, the yet-to-be-titled effort was written after a personality crisis and brief hiatus during which Malin attempted-among other things-stints as a charity auctioneer; a Las Vegas wedding DJ; and a documentarian of Rastafarian culture. But none of that, as Malin explains, has taken away from his one-of-a-kind intensity: "I wanted to mix the raw, loose energy that I got from playing in my early hardcore bands and the lonely feeling I get from traveling with an acoustic guitar."
Expect to hear the album in early 2010, with many tour dates to follow.

Didn't get a chance to talk to any of them but waved a lot.

The other two of three are Ben Landsverk and Chris Robley. It's free. I'll be on the radio, missing it as usual.
She'll show up with Ben and Chris at Doug Fir the next night with Roxy Consort and members of the Portland Cello Project for a fascinating classical/folk/pop crossover show, "Cellos & Choirs, she says.

A Report from the Chronic Care & Prevention Congress
What a day. The Disease Management Care Blog got to moderate an afternoon session at the World Health Care Congress' 3rd Annual Chronic Care & Prevention Congress. The speakers were David Nash, MD, MBA and Dean of the Jefferson School of Popualtion Health, Chris Selecky, the President and CEO of LifeMasters and Charles Wilhelm, MD, the Chief Medical Officer of Health System One. The theme of the session was "modern approaches to to chronic care design.! "Dave led things off by describing the founding of the school and the creation of the first ever Masters program in 'Chronic Care Management.' That's right, population-based chronic care has evolved to the point where the science warrants its own higher degree track. Disease management is growing up.
Chris described several care programs being run by LifeMasters that clearly demonstrate how much disease management has grown up. No longer relying on a simple 'call center' model, this disease management organization is using a variety of interlocking approaches, outreach and incentives that are designed to help the patient and the doctor do the right thing. Given numbers like an 85% physician action rate in response to 'health alerts,' LifeMasters may be closing in on the secret sauce.
Yet, Charles described a population-based initiative that was remarkably minimalist when it came to any external support. Rather, assigned patients in! a full-risk population were stratified, their needs and gaps ! in care were communicated to the physicians, a risk adjusted fee was provided and then Health System One got out of the way. And the docs responded.
While much of the Congress focused on that Chosen Favorite Darling of the beltway policy makers, the patient centered medical home (more on that in a later post), the DMCB's session was instructive on the growing maturity and diversity of population-based programs in general. The 'take-aways' for the DMCB were a) this care management science is really growing in sophistication and 2) there is a 'suite' of options out there when it comes to chronic illness care; the best fit may be less a matter of dogma and more a function of what best meets the needs of the population and the perspective of the sponsoring organization.

NetApp SNMP monitoring with Nagios
Here are some tips regarding the monitoring of NetApp filers with Nagios. First off, the Nagios Exchange includes many NetApp-specific monitoring scripts, all based on SNMP. I ended up using check_netapp3.pl, but I hit some roadblocks when it came to checking disk space on NetApp volumes (the SNMP queries were timing out in that case).
The check_netapp3.pl script works fine for things such as CPU load. For example, I created a new command called check_netapp_cpu in /usr/local/nagios/etc/objects/commands.cfg on my Nagios server:

However, for things such as percent of disk us! ed for a given NetApp volume, I had to use good old SNMP checks directly against the NetApp. Any time you use SNMP, you need to know which OIDs to hit. In this case, the task is a bit easier because you can look inside the check_netapp3.pl script to see some example of NetApp-specific OIDs. But let's assume you have no clue where to start. Here's a step-by-step procedure:
1) Find the NetApp MIB -- I found one online here.
2) Do an snmpwalk against the top-level OID, which in this case is 1.3.6.1.4.1.789. Save the output in a file.
Example: snmpwalk -v 1 -c mycommunity IP_OF_NETAPP_FILER 1.3.6.1.4.1.789 > myfiler.out
3) Search for a volume name that you know about in myfiler.out. I searched for /vol/vol0 and found this line:
SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.789.1.5.4.1.2.5 = STRING: "/vol/vol0/"
This will give you a clue as to the OID range that corresponds to! volume information. If you search for "1.5.4.1.2" in the NetA! pp MIB, you'll see that it corresponds to dfTable.dfEntry.dfFileSys. So the entries
1.5.4.1.2.1 through 1.5.4.1.2.N will show the N file systems available on that particular filer.
4) I was interested in percentage of disk used on those volumes, so I found the variable dfPerCentKBytesCapacity in the MIB, corresponding to the OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.5.4.1.6. This means that for /vol/vol0 (which is the 5th entry in my file system table), I need to use 1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.5.4.1.6.5 to get the percentage of disk used.
So, to put all this detective work together, it's easy to create specific commands that query a particular filer for the percentage disk used for a particular volume. Here's an example that uses the check_snmp Nagios plugin:

Mountain View (CA) - Due to posts on Google's official Google Video blog group that contained a link to a computer worm, the Internet search giant is now apologizing, with reports that some 50,000 viewers and subscribers to the group were potentially affected.
According to a post from Google on the group discussion board, three postings to the group contained the virus. Google says the messages were removed, but not until after they had gone live, and in some cases, been e-mailed to users. "Some of these posts may have contained a virus called W32/Kapser.A@mm -- a mass mailing worm. If you think you have downloaded this virus from the group or an email message, we recommend you run your antivirus program to remove it," said Google in its message.
The virus is more well known by its street name, Kama Sutra. If downloaded on a computer, it systematically attempts to remove antivirus and firewall protections, which then makes the system more vulnerable! to additional attacks. It also corrupts files stored on an infected computer, including Microsoft Word and Excel files.
According to Google spokesperson Gabriel Stricker, protocols have been put into place to ensure that such a breach won't happen again. The company did not comment on how or why the worm showed up in the Google postings in the first place.

OwnerSense
One of the best ways to spot new, early stage startups is when they begin to search for their first outside hires and post advertisements on job boards. A company called OwnerSense, based in Devon, is advertising for a developer who can do, well, just about everything. OwnerSense describes itself as a "web service that helps families make better household purchasing decisions, by saving them time, money and inconvenience". They say they closed a seed round in January and are actively building their team. The site appears to allow people to sign up to participate in a private beta.

Nintendo Faces Patent Ban on Game Controllers
Nintendo Co., the world's biggest maker of handheld game machines, is facing a ban on U.S. sales of some controllers for its Wii and GameCube systems after it lost a bid to overturn a $21 million patent-infringement verdict. U.S. District Judge Ron Clark in Lufkin, Texas, rejected Nintendo's request for a new trial in the case won by closely held Anascape Ltd. of Tyler, Texas.

Three Swedish ISPs to Erase Users' Traffic Data
Having apparently been scared off illegal file sharing in large numbers by a new Swedish law that went into effect April 1, pirates in that country now have a new safe harbor to escape law enforcement. Three Swedish Internet service providers, among them Tele2, one of the country's three major broadband operators, have stated that they will erase traffic data to protect their customers' privacy.

White House Clarifies How Staff Accesses Twitter
Bloggers were all aflutter earlier this month when White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told C-SPAN that, for some reason, Twitter usage was blocked at the White House. Now, White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said Twitter access is enabled on White House computers for the new media team, but it is blocked on the remainder of White House computers for security purposes–though they're working on getting those restrictions relaxed.

EBay Settles Litigation with Founders of Skype
EBay has formally settled the litigation around its sale of the Skype online calling service. The founders of Skype, Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, will drop their lawsuits against the company and a consortium of buyers whose bid to purchase 65 percent of Skype was announced last month, according to an announcement released by eBay.

Consumers want more music than ever, yet monetizing that appetite has never been more difficult. The typical music fan carries hundreds or thousands of songs on an iPod, iPhone, or other portable. Online, the same fan frequently gorges on a buffet of free singles, and offline, purchases far fewer CDs than before. That is great for hardware companies like Apple and broadband providers like Verizon, though major labels are facing dire financial difficulties.
The greatest carnage has been focused on the recording, though even publishers are feeling the pinch. Major label group balance sheets frequently reveal flat or slightly declining publishing revenues, thanks partly to decreased mechanical royalties on CDs. Meanwhile, the quest to monetize online has been brutal, and most operations either lose money, or barely shave a profit.
The iTunes Store has sold more than five billion downloads since 2003, but the real money for Apple has always been in ha! rdware. Meanwhile, almost every other online store has been marginalized and punished with weak volume. On mobile decks, the story on ringtones continues to ebb - at least outside hyper-markets like Asia. On an aggregated level, digital has failed to cover the monstrous void left by sinking CDs.
So, why won't they buy, at least in the quantities required to sustain a meaningful recording industry? One analysis relies on simple economics - alongside free, a slightly-better product is positioned for 99-cents, $14.95 a month, or something in-between. Major label group balance sheets frequently reveal flat or slightly declining publishing revenues, thanks partly to decreased mechanical royalties on CDs. Meanwhile, the quest to monetize online has been brutal, and most operations either lose money, or barely shave a profit.
The iTunes Store has sold more than five billion downloads since 2003, but the real money for Apple has always been in ha! rdware. Meanwhile, almost every other online store has been marginalized and punished with weak volume. On mobile decks, the story on ringtones continues to ebb - at least outside hyper-markets like Asia. On an aggregated level, digital has failed to cover the monstrous void left by sinking CDs.
So, why won't they buy, at least in the quantities required to sustain a meaningful recording industry? On the eve of the band's archives going public at the University of Calitfornia at Santa Cruz, The Atlantic looks at the business practices of the Grateful Dead and the lessons they can teach any artist or label struggling to connect with and monetize their relationship with an audience.
In many ways The Dead were visionaries who created customer value, promoted social networking, and did strategic planning. Along the way, there are more than one lesson that could have changed everything if the music industry had payed attention on the day that Sean Fanning started work on Napster in his dorm room.

Good news for Pune real estate market! Gaming industry looks set for at least another year or two of strong growth!!
Pune real estate slowdown:
In the comments, most of you express your concerns about sluggish US economy, future of an IT industry and job cuts.'Are Pune real estate developers living in a fools' paradise?' you wonder, when new township projects are launched in Pune real estate market.
Most of us are convinced that builders in Pune are not aware about the imminent danger we all are facing. Some of us are even very sure about the crash of Pune real estate which is mainly driven by the growth of an IT industry in Pune.

Brown-nosing 101: Mn/DOT Commish Sorel on Innovation and Jamming, Collaboration - uses forbidden government word "marketing" - yet not struck by lightning
Thought I'd share an excerpt from an FHWA Innovator newsletter article featuring our Mn/DOT boss, Commissioner Tom Sorel.
The interview mentions my office at Mn/DOT: Policy Analysis, Research and Innovation, which is headed up by Nick Thompson (of UPA and MnPass project management fame) and Phil Barnes (the new-ish Mn/DOT Risk Management guy), and employs a whole bunch of really good, smart people and interesting, important functions within it, such as research and market research, risk management, library, eWorkPlace, ADA, and other stuff like flying cars and friendly but emotionally unstable robots.
While I don't know Tom that well personally, I have met him a few times, and I do get the impression that he genuinely cares about two things that I'm very passionate about: innovation and marketing.
On the flip side, he did bump me off one of the state airplanes back in October, forcing me to drive to Duluth – and, as we all know, Duluth is one of the places where everywhere you go is, quite literally, uphill, both ways, in the snow. I doubt I'll ever be powerful enough to give him any kind of payback for that one.
Sidenote: Before you get all wound up about the expense of flying to Duluth, it can be cheaper than driving if we fill up the plane – we even have people and a program to calculate the savings and everything, so relax.
I find it interesting that Tom calls marketing "marketing", as it seems to be an unwritten rule that, in government, we don't call it marketing. We call it communication(s), or public relations, or outreach, or technology transfer.
I don't agree with that approach, however, as I believe that we in government need to be driven by the same forces that drive private industry: money and (ideally) customer service. We may not be making money, but we can save it and spend it wisely. We can focus on providing better customer service and servant leadership. We can market our services and value. To me, that's what marketing is: trying to show that a good or service you provide has intrinsic and/or monetary value (hopefully both).
One note about Tom's interview:
Tom mentions a project we did based on the IBM Innovation Jam model, which we ended up calling an E-Magination Jam, or E-Jam. I was lucky enough to be part of the cross-departmental team that helped execute the project.
We ended up using an online service called Uservoice. If you email or call Daniel Kan at Uservoice, they were offering a government discount of 100% (read FREE) for the first 12 months if you use it for gathering public input (like Seattle, WA, and Austin, TX), and a 50% discount for whatever else you might use it for.
And, if you tell Daniel I sent you, I get…badadadadadadada…nothing! That's right, zilch! Since I work for the government, I can't accept any kickbacks. The upside for you is that I really must like it if I'm endorsing it for free – the downside for you is that you and some guy Googling "forbidden brown jam" are probably the only ones who will ever read this post.
Since the E-Jam I have used Uservoice for one other internal project designed to increase transparency and collaboration during our annual research project selection and funding process. While Uservoice isn't perfect, and isn't as customizable as I would like, it is a very good introduction to the world of online transparency, jamming, collaboration, customer feedback, or whatever you care to call it.

Why is now such a critical time for the highway community to innovate?
If there ever was a time to look at innovation, now is that time. We just published our transportation plan, and we identified a $50 billion funding gap over a 20–year period. I'm asked all the time how we're going to close that gap. Recently, I did a media event at which I was asked that very question. I said we've got to look at different kinds of funding mechanisms, and innovation goes hand in hand with that. If we can be innovative in areas like contracting, financing, new materials and congestion mitigation techniques, I think we can close that gap.
What progress do you see the highway community making in becoming more innovative?
For many years we didn't have the funding challenges we have today, so there wasn't strong motivation to look at innovative practices. But that's changing. When you look at transportation organizations today, you see that organizational structures and skill sets are changing to reflect an innovative approach. But it's not something that can happen overnight. Because they have been around for a long time, many transportation organizations are big ships to move. It's just the nature of our business.
I think the key to moving forward is respecting the past. I say that over and over again here in Minnesota. If we can respect the past and the people who have done a great job getting us to where we are today, then change and innovation become more acceptable. You don't want to discount the past because a lot of creative and innovative people preceded us.

Why did you launch a new Minnesota DOT office—Policy Analysis, Research and Innovation—with innovation as a key responsibility?
Shortly after I got here, I decided we needed a strategic vision that reflects the future. A key element of that vision is innovation. We've identified it as one of the strategic directions of the department. I felt we needed some element of the organization that could support that, so we created this office as the focal point for jump-starting innovation. That doesn't mean innovation is not occurring throughout the department, but this office helps us create an innovative culture.
The other thing we did within that office was create an external partnering group to work on relationships with the stakeholders Mn/DOT deals with, such as city and county officials, contractors and consultants. Within that group we established a marketing component that serves as a focal point for external marketing for the department.
How important is marketing to your agency's success?
I am a big believer in marketing and always have been, so when I came to Mn/DOT I wanted to see that we had the marketing element the organization needs. We've always had marketing research activities and good marketing in certain areas, such as our snow and ice control area. I wanted to expand that.
We have since been using marketing and market research for other things, such as our urban partnership agreements. We've been using marketing techniques in discussions we're having on rail and on our TIGER [Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery] grant applications.I see a big role for marketing in gaining an understanding of public values and being responsive to public needs. We're now developing a marketing plan for the entire department. We're ratcheting up what we've done in the past and trying to develop a mindset of thinking like marketers. It's something I talk about to employees all the time. It's not just the marketing staff who's responsible. We're all responsible. We need to understand what our customers value and what kinds of services they're looking for.
What else are you doing to jump–start innovation?
There is one thing we're in the middle of now that I'm pretty excited about. Several years ago, I was looking at how private sector organizations stimulate innovation. I came across an IBM program called Innovation Jam. They pick a topic, and for several days people get online and throw out ideas. Other people join the conversation, and they just keep building on it. In the end, they have some new and innovative ideas for products and services.
When I came to Mn/DOT, I thought, "Why can't we do something like that?" So as we speak we're in the middle of an E-magination Jam. It's going on online for this entire week. Employees are throwing out ideas and then jamming on these ideas. If you don't have an idea, you go online and vote for other people's ideas.
We're trying to focus employees on our strategic directions—safety, mobility, innovation, leadership and transparency. So the ideas they put up there should fit into one of those strategic directions. But they have the capability of throwing anything up there. It has been a really creative process. We've set aside a little bit of the Destination Innovation fund to fund some of the ideas, and we'll fund other ideas other ways.
